2024 Rays Alumni Preview

We are just days away from first pitch of the 2024 College Baseball Season, so now is the perfect time to take a look ahead at some former Rays as they prepare for their college campaigns.

Catcher MATTHEW DePREY enjoyed a breakout season for Xavier in 2023 where he slugged 14 home runs helping the Musketeers to a Big East Conference Tournament title and a trip to the NCAA tournament. The senior backstop is looking to help return Xavier to the postseason. DePrey caught nearly every inning while hitting .278 on the year with 10 doubles and 42 RBIs a year ago. De Prey was added to the D1baseball.com Preseason Top 50 Catchers list.

Sophomore LHP MATTHEW MUELLER is coming off a stellar freshman season at Gonzaga. The southpaw struck out 61 batters in 48.2 innings pitched, including a nine punchout game against Minnesota. Mueller was named a mid-season Northwoods League All-Star while pitching for the Lakeshore Chinooks last Summer. Mueller looks to play a larger role on the mound for the Zags in 2024.

JOHN NETT, a four-year standout at St. Cloud State used his graduate transfer season to transfer for Kansas. Nett Slashed .394/.487/.575 with 228 hits, 49 doubles, 10 triples, 12 home runs, 120 RBIs, 172 runs and 92 walks in 148 career games with the Huskies. Nett figures to have a prominent role for the Jayhawks in 2024.

Freshman CAL FISHER enters his first season at Florida State coming off a Northwoods League postseason All-Star award with the Madison Mallards. Fisher, a recent high school grad, hit seven homers with the Mallards. Fisher has the eye of second-year coach Link Jarrett and figures to factor into the mix up the middle for the Seminoles on opening weekend.

KOLTON SCHALLER burst onto the scene at Kent State a season ago. As a freshman Schaller batted .326 with three homers, earning a bulk of starts at the end of the season. Schaller, seeks to be a factor in the Golden Flashes lineup from the jump, featured a .453 OBP to go along with five stolen bases last season.

JOSH CARON enters his junior season at Nebraska and is expected to play a large role behind the dish for the 2024 campaign. Caron belted seven homers, 11 doubles and drove in 29 runs a season ago for the Huskers who are projected to finish towards to top of the B1G once again.

Sophomore LHP ASHTON MICHEK played a huge role in Augustana making it to the NCAA Division II World Series a season ago. Michek compiled a 2.83 ERA in 57.1 innings while striking out 52 batters. Michek held batters to a .239 batting average against. The southpaw figures to play a role in the starting rotation as we enter into 2024.

Six former Rays expect to play key roles for Milwaukee as the Panthers look to start new head coach Shaun Wegner off on the right foot. Junior 1B JUSTIN HAUSSER hit .292 last season with 12 doubles and 21 RBIs. KEAGON KAUFMANN appeared in 12 games and sported a 4.96 ERA. Madison College transfer GABE ROESSLER was a .337 career hitter for the WolfPack, helping them to back-to-back College World Series appearances. THOMAS OTTO started eight games behind the dish last season. ADRIAN MONTILVA fashioned a 3.05 ERA with 23 strike outs in 20.2 innings. Freshman RILEY PETERSON expects innings out of the pen.

A trio of former Rays will look to send legendary Minnesota coach John Anderson out on a high note as Anderson enters his last season at the helm of the Gopher’s program. Junior right-hander WILL SEMB was named one of the top Pro prospects in the B1G and will look to return from an arm injury suffered last season. Semb has run his fastball up to 96 MPH. Sophomore right CADEN CAPOMACCIO will look to build upon a strong freshman season where he threw 21.1 innings. SEnior outfield BRADY JURGELLA will look to play a role in the outfield right away after hitting .224 a season ago.

Four former Rays will look to keep North Dakota State near the top of the Summit League standings again in 2024. Sophomore INF DAVIS HAMILTON appeared in 39 games (33 starts) for the Bison, hitting .240 with a homer and 14 RBIs with a .378 OBP%. Hamilton hit seven homer runs for the Madison Mallards last Summer. Incoming freshman JAKE SCHAFFNER was named the Summit League preseason Freshman of the Year and will look to make an early impact on the infield. Senior right-hander HUNTER ROSENBAUM appeared in seven games and will factor into the bullpen, while freshman ROMAN TRAPANI will look to earn some innings.

JAKE BERG begins his senior campaign at Lipscomb where he started 58 games a season ago. Berg hit .225 with three home runs and walked 54 times. Berg appeared both behind the dish and in the outfield for the Bisons.

OWEN WASHBURN looks to regain his dominance at the plate in 2024. Washburn hit three home runs for the Red Raiders in 2023, but slugged seven homers in 2022. Washburn will factor into the starting outfield right off the bat.

JOEY NERAT will seek to be a constant starter in the Dallas Baptist lineup in 2024. Nerat belted a home run in his first career start a season ago.

CAL McGINNIS will get a new start at Evansville after transferring from Bradley. McGinnis played in 41 games (33 starts) for the Braves last season, where he hit .261 with three home runs. McGinnis should factor into the infield rotation early this season.

A pair of former Rays will look to help UW-La Crosse back to the Division III World Series in 2024. Senior JACK OLVER was a first-team All-WIAC player a season ago where he hit .374 with 13 homers. Olver is a career .410 hitter for the Eagles. Junior ANTHONY VIVIAN swatted a league-high 19 home runs last season, while hitting .355 with 54 RBIs.

MASON KIRCHBERG is coming off a breakout season in 2023 for UW-Oshkosh. Kirchberg belted 11 homers with 35 RBIs last season for the Titans.

MARCUS CLINE transferred to Tulane from Milwaukee and is expected to make an immediate impact on the Green Wave infield to start 2024. Cline hit 14 doubles with 29 RBIs for the Panthers last season.

Sophomore right-hander GAVIN GAWRONSKI earned North Central Newcomer of the Year honors after pitching to a 1.69 ERA in 10.2 innings a season ago. Gawronski is expected to have a larger role on the mound in 2024.

Eight Former Rays will look to help Madison College back to the College World Series once again in 2024. NICK WEST, HOWIE RICKETT, NICK NOWAK, ANDRES KLEINSEK, TRACE KIRCHBERG, JALEN GELLINGS, MICHAEL CARPENTER and EDISON ALONSO all are expected to play large roles for the WolfPack.

Bradley sophomore THEO ZEIDLER emerged late last season, coming back from an injury, to throw 6.1 innings for the Braves. Zeidler will be called upon to throw more innings from the start for Bradley.

A pair of former Rays will seek to make an impact right away for Michigan State. RHP QUINN FALLISH expects to compete for early roles on the mound, while INF LANDEN LOZIER will look to earn innings on the infield for the Spartans.

Freshman RHP COLE SELVIG, a reigning Wisconsin High School Player of the Year, will look for innings early for the Texas Longhorns.
